Gobblin prototype

blogimage

After hours of pushing a mouse about, a lot of prototyping, loads of redesigns and testing, we’re ready to show what we’ve been cooking…

Introducing the Goblin – a medium sized router that will be perfect for shaping molds and cores for small surfboards and big skateboards.

The Z stage has been designed to have a compact weight layout to help with stability at high feed rates.

The Z axis is setup to have a 3:2 gear ratio but also has mounting points for direct coupling of a Nema23 stepper as well. We added two thrust bearings to the fixed end to help accommodate the weight of a bigger spindle.

As the 800w spindle is almost 3kg, I have opted for bigger side plates and connecting them in all four corners of the main gantry plates to see if this will prove more stiffness without adding significantly more weight.

As you may be able to tell, we have given mounting point for the steppers both above and below the main axis rails, because options are always good!

So far I am very happy with how it feels, very stiff and smooth movement. The balance point quite close to the centerline of the gantry so very excited to see if it will give smoother motion.

We’ll be testing soon so be sure to watch this space!

Coming together nicely. Just got to ask some questions as I’m trying to work out my own design at the moment.
What is the span width on the Y axis?
Are you using C-Beam for the span the Y-carraige runs down? Or does dual 20×80 v-slot section give as good or better maximum deflection?
    Cheers. 🙂
